Sharon Hecker is an art historian who specializes in modern and contemporary Italian art. She is a leading international authority on Medardo Rosso, and has written on other key twentieth-century Italian artists such as Lucio Fontana and Luciano Fabro.

Medardo Rosso

Sharon Hecker has authored over twenty critical essays on Rosso in books, scholarly journals, exhibition catalogues and edited volumes. She co-curated, with Harry Cooper, Medardo Rosso: Second Impressions at Harvard University Art Museums, St. Louis Art Museum, and Nasher Sculpture Center (2003-2004) (catalogue Yale University Press, 2004). She also authored Medardo Rosso, (Peter Freeman Inc., 2009). She has won numerous fellowships for her work on Rosso, including a Fulbright Scholarship, a Mellon Fellowship and a Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities. Her most recent book is A Moment’s Monument: Medardo Rosso and the International Origins of Modern Sculpture (University of California Press, 2017). Winner of the Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.

Luciano Fabro

Sharon has authored critical essays on Fabro’s works, published in scholarly journals such as Oxford Art Journal as well as numerous edited volumes. Her translations of Fabro’s theoretical writings and lessons on art appear in Luciano Fabro, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1992), Luciano Fabro 100 disegni at the Kunstmuseum Winterthur (2013) and Luciano Fabro. Disegno In-Opera GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo CIAC (Centro Italiano Arte Contemporanea di Foligno), (2014), to which she also contributed an essay.

Lucio Fontana

Sharon has published on Fontana’s ceramic and mosaic works in Oxford Art Journal. She is currently conducting research on Fontana’s sculptures for architectural settings around Milan.
